Vendors at the Suva Municipal Market commemorated Fiji’s 50th year of Independence yesterday in partnership with the Suva City Council, Suva United Market Vendors Association and the Wheelbarrow Boys Association.

Stalls were judged based on their Fiji Day decorations and attire and awards were given judged by the SCC.

Chief Guest at the celebration SCC Chairman/Special Administrators Isireli Tikoduadua said this year’s celebration was one for the history books as most would not be around in the next 50-years to share their experience.

He acknowledged vendors for their commitment to serving the public and highlighted their role in combatting Non-Communicable Diseases in Fiji.

“Our responsibility as citizens is to continue to look after Suva because it is where a lot of activities happen,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

“We have to look after litter, our rubbish, we have to start taking ownership of keeping Suva clean.”

He also thanked Police Officers for their assistance in curbing crimes in the Capital city.

Market Vendor Ulina Tinai said the event gave them a chance to beautify their stalls and joined in the celebrations.

Ms Tinai said she was looking forward to spending the Fiji Day weekend in her village in Nadroga with her family.

The winning stalls are;

  • Well Presented Stalls – Ms Tagilala of Section B and Mr Tabua Soko of Section C.
  • Best Creative Stall – Kesaia of Section E.
  • Best Decorated Stalls – Flower Vendors.
  • Longest Serving Female Vendor – Satya Wati, market vendor for 35 years.
  • Longest Serving Male Vendor – Bal Ram, market vendor for 45 years.
