A  couple, who have spent all their lives working as sugarcane labourers are now in desperate need for shelter.

Even before their marriage, Uday Chand, 64, of Seaqaqa and Nirmala Wati, 65, of Tovata, spent all their lives harvesting sugarcane. Due to diabetics complications, Mr Chand’s left big toe was amputated in August.

“Now I can’t harvest cane and neither can my wife as she is taking care of me,” Mr Chand said.

“We are living with my wife’s sister but we can’t be staying here for long.

“We have spent so many years living in various farmer’s farmhouse while cutting cane for them,” he said.

“I never thought one day my health would give up and we would not have a place of our own.”

They have only one child, a daughter who has been living with her family after marriage.

Mrs Wati said her sister generously gave them a piece of land at Lajonia in Labasa.

If anyone is willing to help them, they could be contacted on 9621453.
