Always be responsible to stay alive when behind the wheel.

This is what Corporal Ronald Dutt is advising to motorists in the Rakiraki area as the nation approaches its 50-year independence day celebration.

The 37-year-old Police officer from Vatusekiyasawa in Rakiraki is in charge of the Traffic Department at the Nalawa Police Post. He is taking road safety seriously during the celebrations.

“I am going into my 15-year with the force and I’m loving every minute of it,” he said.

From his younger days he had always wanted to be a Police officer.

“I believe in doing right, helping people, especially keeping the peace,” she said.

“I can tell you if you ask anyone from my childhood days, they will tell you the same.”

If you are travelling between Rakiraki and Tavua you will be sure to catch him, hiding in the bushes with his speed gun to catch the traffic offenders.

“Just last year I was made a corporal and I’ve haven’t been doing traffic for long, he said.

“My biggest challenge in a day is the angry drivers. They get so defensive and rude when they are being pulled over.

“With all my breath I keep reminding myself it’s a small part of the job.”

Compared to a few years ago, he said, drivers were now more aware of speed limits and highly populated areas.

If you are around the area please meet him the right way and not because you’ve been pulled over.

“Always be careful on the roads because you are responsible for your life and those of others,” he said.

He said after all this, he was looking forward to tying the knot with the love of his life.
