Paul Jaduram, a prominent businessman in Fiji and former mayor of Labasa Town still remembers Fiji’s Independence Day celebration in London in 1970.

Now at the age of 80, he is excited and had already celebrated Fiji’s 50 years of independence with his staff at the Hotel Northwinds in Labasa on Wednesday.

“In 1970, I was a 22-year-old electronic student studying at the College of Electronics, University of Cambridge,” Mr Jaduram said.

“On October 10, I was invited by Fiji’s High Commissioner along with other Fijians to attend Fiji’s Independence Day celebration at Lancaster Gate Hotel in London.”

He said during that time there were not many Fijians.

“As a Fijian and a student I was very excited to take part in the cocktail and dinner,” the father of three children said.

“I thank God for blessing me with good health so that I can celebrate Fiji’s 50 years independence.”

After returning to Fiji from studies he married Stella Jaduram who was  from London, England.

He has been in the business since 1975 in Labasa.

In 1977, Mr Jaduram, as counsellor of Labasa Town Council, was invited with his wife to meet Queen Elizabeth the second and the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Phillip at Subrail Park.

That is when the photo was taken and  published in a London newspaper.
