An elderly grandmother who lost everything in a house fire at Lowcost in Labasa is seeking assistance to build a house for herself.

Lila Wati is renting a house in Vunika, Labasa.

As a social welfare recipient, the 65-year-old widow gets $30 cash and $50 food voucher every month.

The mother of two children and four grandchildren struggles to pay for her rent.

“My son built a five-bedroom house and I was living in it until on March 4, this year when the fire destroyed everything,” Ms Wati said.

“I was away for holidays in Australia when the incident happened.”

She said upon her return she had to find a house for rent.

“Without family and financial support it is very difficult to rent and live a normal life,” she said.

“Unfortunately, due to old age I can’t work anywhere and I can’t beg for money as it is illegal.

I really don’t know what to do.

Sometimes I feel like ending my life but then I think it is against my faith.”

She said all her children were married and had their own families.

“I have written many letters to religious organisations and business people in Labasa but no one responded,” she said.

It was until she was found by Fiji Sun on the street giving out letters. If anyone is willing to assist, she can be contacted on mobile number 9406343.
