Adi Laisa Balavu was delivering supplies for her cancer patients when she received a call from the Office of the President on Wednesday afternoon.

She was in Ba. She was told that she would be given a commemorative medal for Fiji’s Independence.

“I had to organise another person to step in for me so I could come. And I would not miss the day for anything,” said Adi Laisa.

“I feel honoured. I guess the hours I have spent with my team crossing rivers, mountains, in rain or shine and going to the outer islands are being recognised.

“But I have done those things because I was not looking for a medal.”

The medal ceremony held on Thursday at the State House also allowed Adi Laisa to meet with her high school teacher, Kamla Naicker.

Ms Naicker taught Adi Laisa at Jasper Williams High School in 1975.

It was a surreal moment as the medal recipient reunited with her teacher and the two were able to talk about their days in Lautoka.

Ms Naicker was accompanied by her husband, Hari Raj Naicker, whose service as a teacher, a soccer referee and as an active official of the Fiji Pensioners Association was also recognised.
