New and youngest vendors at the Suncoast Flea Market, Troy Nand and good friend Zara Darling, hold the record of the fastest product sale.

They recently joined the Flea Market in Rakiraki, selling guppies. The guppy, also known as million fish and rainbow fish, is one of the world’s most widely distributed tropical fish.

Troy, 15, who owns more than a thousand guppies said this was a hobby and was so excited when they had sold out by noon.

“We sold more than 15 jars, each had three different colours of guppies. I’ve had guppies since I was very young and Zara, 11, recently came up with the idea to see if they could sell,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Suncoast Flea Market is planning their fifth successful market day by popular demand.

From only 17 vendors at the first one to more than 30 in the last one.

They have also partnered with the Rakiraki Special School Vocational class in their bid to increase empowerment. The staff and teachers of the school had been quietly working hard to change how others view the institute.

Their hope is that they introduce them to the real world now by putting them out to experience things firsthand – from making the products themselves to marketing, selling and preparing the budget so, they could also consider being entrepreneurs.

The Suncoast Flea Market is held on the Sunday of every month.
