Fear Grips University Students In Suva Area

Tertiary students living in Raiwai, along Nailuva Road and Grantham Road are scared to walk in these areas, following a series of muggings, allegedly targeting students.

Two weeks ago, surveillance cameras from a home in Tukani Street, Raiwai, captured footage of a tertiary student being mugged by two suspects. Her phone and laptop were forcefully taken from her as she walked home. The student moved out of her flat the next day.

A few weeks earlier, hooded men targeted a group of girls.

Shomal Singh, 19, a tertiary student who lives at McFarlane Road, said: “If I finish classes and it is dark, I will catch a cab.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the two suspects in the recent case were arrested for similar offences and are currently in remand. Their case will be recalled today for a bail hearing.
