Digicel Flames got off to a winning start with a resounding 65-55 win over the Punjas Stingrays yesterday.

Despite with a week to prepare for the Digicel Punjas Netball Reset Championship, the Lusiana Rakavono-coached side was too hot to handle at the FMG Gymnasium.

Led by veteran defender Alisi Naqiri, the Flames dominated throughout with Matila Vocea and Maliana Rusivakula shooting accuracy contributed to the win against Stingrays which has Unaisi Rauluni and Kelera Masau.

Rakavono said this was only the start for her side.

“It was a great game, and I am proud of them and their performance,” she said.

“They have been training for months but we were only given one week to prepare.

“The defenders were strong and were a bit carried away at the start but we managed to come out strong by utilising the turnovers.

“We will go back to the drawing board and come back stronger next week.”

In the second game Punjas Thunderbirds beat Digicel Lightning in a close encounter, 62 – 59.

Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki was happy with the start of the 2020 Digicel Punjas Reset Championship.

The four teams in the competition comprised of national training squad members.

“This is an intense competition as we have witnessed.

“It was opportunity for the girls to showcase their talents. We have 11 high school students taking part,” she added.
