Police Investigate Assault Complaint Against Official

Police are investigating a complaint lodged by an official of the People’s Republic of China alleging he was assaulted during an official engagement earlier this month.
Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, said the alleged incident was being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department. They were also working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the matter.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy says that the Taipei Trade Office in Fiji held the so-called “National Day” event in public in the evening of October 8, 2020 at the Grand Pacific Hotel .
It said: “This kind of function clearly violates the one-China principle and the relevant rules and regulations of the Fijian Government, with an attempt to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan” internationally.
On that very evening, the staff of the Taipei Trade Office in Fiji acted provocatively against the Chinese Embassy staff who were carrying out their official duties in the public area outside the function venue, causing injuries and damage to one Chinese diplomat.
Police are now investigating.”
