Grandfather In A Wheelchair Pleads Guilty To Three Counts Of Rape

The High Court in Suva yesterday heard how an 83-year-old grandfather in a wheelchair raped two granddaughters.

The court heard that the accused raped the first victim as the second victim watched and then asked the second victim to lie down on the bed while the first victim watched the accused commit the offences.

He had pleaded guilty to three counts of rape. The third victim in the matter is the accused’s six-year-old neighbour.

The accused appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar for the summary of facts, mitigation and sentencing hearing of his case.

He raped the three victims on May 30 and June 1 this year at an island village. The first two victims in the matter were aged seven and six years old at the time of the offences.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Swastika Sharma read out the summary of facts in court yesterday to which the accused has agreed.

Defence lawyer from the Legal Aid Commission, Jalesi Korotini, in mitigation, told the court that the accused was a widower and lived alone.

The court also heard that the accused was a stroke patient for the last 13 years and the defence were awaiting further medical reports to confirm the level of sickness the accused suffered as part of the mitigation submissions.

Justice Goundar will sentence the man on October 26.
