No Bail For Three Accused Of Murdering Bus Driver

Bail has been denied to three men who allegedly assaulted a bus driver, resulting in his death earlier this month.

Teacher Mikaele Lawaniyali, 44, labourer Josateki Rokodakunivosa, 22, and Isikeli Tawake, 20, unemployed, appeared yesterday in the Magistrates Court in Nausori, jointly charged with one count of murder.

They were initially charged with act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. However, the three men were taken back into Police custody following the death of the bus driver.

The case was reclassified as murder and the accused were jointly charged with one count of murder.

The accused are alleged to have assaulted the 54-year-old driver inside his bus, while parked at the Nausori Bus Station on October 3. The victim succumbed to his injuries and died on October 9.

Lawaniyali’s lawyer, Josaia Niudamu from Niudamu Lawyers, made a bail application however, the Magistrate refused bail and ordered that the bail application be made at the High Court.

The matter will be called on October 30 in Suva.
