Judge Blasts Rapist For Robbing Girl’s Innocence

You perpetrated the offences in the victim’s own home, where she should have felt safe.

These were the words of Justice Riyaz Hamza while sentencing a 53-year-old man to 14 years in jail for the rape, sexual assault and attempted rape of his grandniece.

The incidents happened between July 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019 at the victim’s home in Nasinu while she was alone with the offender.

The victim was aged between 10 and 11 years at the time of the offences.

Justice Hamza said the victim had referred to the offender as her grandfather, the offender lived with the victim and her family and that the victim had trusted him. However, he breached the trust expected from him and the breach was enormous.

“You took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability, helplessness and naivety. You exposed the innocent mind of a child to sexual activity at such a tender age, and thereby robbed the victim of her innocence,” the Judge said.

He noted that the impact of the crime on the victim was extremely traumatic and it was said to be continuing.

He also noted that the offender was in remand for a period of 10 months, which he ruled, should be considered as part of the sentence served.

The offender was told he would not be eligible for parole until he had served 11 years of his sentence.
