The people on Rotuma appreciated what the national carrier was doing for the island,  Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said yesterday.

His comments followed Fiji Airways subsidiary Fiji Link’s flight from Nadi/Rotuma/Nadi which arrived on the mainland at around 5pm.

There were 51 passengers with him who boarded the Fiji Link DQ-FJX to Rotuma.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said 50 cents  commemorative coins were  distributed to school heads.

“We got to see some Government projects, and we had a meeting with the cultural chiefs,” he said.

“We had a talanoa session.

“There was feedback from people on the island who appreciated what Fiji Airways was doing.”

Meanwhile, a passenger, Anne Steele, said: “It was beautiful, but  a short trip.

“We really enjoyed the food, especially the lobster and the culture was great.”

President of the International Women’s Association, Judy Compain, said, “It was great to be able to see the island and experience Rotuma, a little bit of the culture.

Maximum return

Fiji Airways executive general manager digital, Akuila Batiweti, said the package was designed to ensure maximum return for the people in Rotuma who participated in the endeavor, allowing them to generate economic activity that is of value to them, their families and the island as a whole.

The Rotuma day trip was prepared in partnership with the district officer Rotuma’s Office on behalf of Island authorities.

Fiji Link will continue the promotion every Saturday until November 28.

The flight departs Nadi at 9:30am  on Saturdays, for a two hour trip   to Rotuma.

Mr Batiweti said Fiji Airways and the island’s authorities recognised and respected the unique culture and traditions of Rotuma.

Special care has been taken and all protocols are followed at all times by the visitors, he said.
