The Tailevu rugby team are confident of breaking their six-year Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy jinx against Nadi next Saturday.

Tailevu escaped the relegation zone after they scored an upset 24-19 win over Naitasiri at the Nakelo District School ground yesterday.

Speaking to SUNsports Tailevu coach Samisoni Baikeitoga said they are ready for Nadi.

“We are happy with this win which is now history for us,” he said.

“We are ready to challenge Nadi for the Farebrother next week. It’s been a while since we last challenge for the trophy.”

What happened: Hosts Tailevu scored their first try through No.8  Timoci Vunimoku in the 8th minute and was converted by Seru Vaniqi for a 7-0 lead.

Naitasiri flanker Tomasi Naiduki showed his power to force his way over to score a try in the 15th minute with Etonia Rokotuisawa kicking over the conversion to level the scores 7-7.

Tailevu loosie Vetaia Tikomailepanoni extended Tailevu’s lead scoring a try in the 20th minute with Vaniqi adding the extras.

The Highlanders were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute where the forwards drove over the tryline with hooker Seremaia Naureure claiming the try and Rokotuisawa kicking over the conversion.

Halftime: Tailevu 14-14 Naitasiri

Tailevu scored their third try to Paula Nayacakalou in the 58th minute with Vaniqi converting for a 21-14 lead.

Tailevu extended their lead to 24-14 with a Vaniqi penalty.

Naitasiri scored a try to Apenisa Waqawai in the dying moments of the game with the conversion going wide.
