The Digicel Flames maintained their winning run by thrashing Punjas Thunderbirds, 72-35, at the FMF Gymnasium, Suva, yesterday.

And shooters Matila Vocea and Maliana Rusivakula’s combination in the circle secured them their second win.

The Flames set a 17 points lead in the first quarter and continued on until the last whistle.

They led 39 -17 at halftime.

Rusivakula, who played throughout, scored 31 goals from 35 attempts while Vocea secured 37 from 42 attempts.

Reama Verekauta substituted Vocea with three minutes left in the third quarter and shot a goal while final quarter replacement, Talei Tawake added another three goals to nail the win.

Despite the strong defence from Thunderbird’s Latu Waqa and Titilia Buloubuli, they failed to help their side to victory.

Flames coach, Lusiana Rakavono, said the girls played according to plan.

“Maliana and Matila combined very well in the circle. They are both experienced players, they managed to get us to the top today,” she said.

“They shared their experience especially to the younger players. We are so proud of them.

“After last week’s game, we went back and polished and fine-tuned some areas of our play and today we came out strong.”

Team captain Alisi Naqiri was also on top of her game returning most possessions to their shooters.

She suffered an injury in the last minute of the game.

“Alisi is a very experienced player and we hope and pray she recovered and we will come back strong against Lightning,” Rakavono said.

“We will take each game as the finals and again we will go back and look at some of the things that need polishing.”

Maliana said she combined well with Matila.

“We communicated a lot as we only played together recently. But we’re grateful we managed to deliver.,” she said.
