Macuata Coach: How We Won Final

Macuata fought right to the final whistle to become the new Vodafone Vanua Championship women’s winners.
The Northerners edged Serua 34-24 in the final at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.
What happened: Serua scored the first try through No.8 Elena Kirikirikula after she intercepted a loose pass. The try was converted for the 7-0 lead.
But Macuata scored two quick tries to Salia Tuilevuka and Vitalina Naikore with both converted,14-7.
Serua closed the gap in the 21st minute with an unconverted try to Amelia Vatutawa.
Macuata continued building phases and some quick passes from their backline helped them score two unconverted tries to extend the lead.
Halftime: Serua 12-24 Macuata.
Serua fought back scoring tries to Siteri Kalouniuca and Vani Ravule. Only one of the tries was converted.
The visitors from Vanua Levu then picked up the momentum before Naikore and Lanieta Lala scored tries to secure the win.
Comments: Macuata coach Maria Tamotubiu said: “The girls gave their 100 per cent to ensure we win the game in style. My message to the girls at the break was simple.
“I told them we just need to keep pushing ourselves until the final whistle.”
Serua coach Sireli Bobo said: “We played well but it was not our day.
“There were a few errors and we also had chances to win but we failed to make it count.”
Macuata walked away with $5000 while Serua pocketed $2000.
