The Suva United Market Vendors Association and kiosk operators operating near the Suva Bus Stand have raised concerns on the alleged inaction of Police officers who have been tasked to look after their area of business.

This was after a woman market vendor fell victim of an alleged assault and robbery incident outside the Suva market last Friday afternoon.

Eyewitness and Kiosk operator Ranjani Lal said the alleged incident happened at around 6.30pm when the victim was coming out of the restroom outside the market.

“The group of boys had waited outside the washroom for this lady and when she came out they punched her on the face and ran away with her purse,” Ms Lal said.

“These are the types of issues we have to deal with here in this area; young boys who have always roamed this area selling cigarette rolls are the ones that are doing this to vendors,” she alleged

“They grabbed her purse and ran away with it and no one was able to catch them.”

She claimed that Police officers stationed at the market operate in fear of the increasing number of young men who roam around their kiosks looking very suspicious.

Another kiosk operator, Avinesh Ram said Police officers were usually outnumbered by the number of people that were seen roaming around the area.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro who confirmed the incident said there was no official report lodged by the victim. However Police attended the scene when they were informed of the alleged incident but the woman had already left.
