Ben Volavola took over the role from Nicky Little in 2015 and has been the first choice ever since. At the 2019 RWC Alivereti Veitokani was the second preference but Coach Vern Cotter opts for Samusamuvodre after his form for the Warriors and Naitasiri.

Tuidraki Samusamuvodre wants to cement his spot as the future Flying Fijians first five-eighth.

The 22-year-old Namotomoto, Nadi native wants to learn from the best when he joins Flying Fijians squad preparing for the Autumn Nations Cup next month in France.

The 2020 Fiji Warriors skipper departed yesterday on a Fiji Airways flight to Sydney with local-based players Jone Koroiduadua, Chris Mbimbi, Peni Matawalu and Melbourne Rebels halfback Frank Lomani.

Samusamuvodre wants to milk the best on tour as he will understudy France-based Flying Fijians No.10 Ben Volavola.

“My aim is to learn from the best in the business and be a future No.10 for Fiji,”Samusamuvodre said.

“The long term goal is to feature at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

“But for the moment I’m happy that I’ve been considered for the role with Ben.  I want to learn from Ben as a lot depends on the role of No. 10 in the team.

“It’s a hugely exciting and talented squad to be part of and I want to contribute as much as possible on the playing field. We’ll be going up against Six Nations teams but this is why we play rugby. We want to test ourselves against the best in the world and hopefully cause a few upsets.”

Volavola took over the role from Nicky Little in 2015 and has been the first choice ever since.

At the 2019 RWC, Alivereti Veitokani was the second preference but Coach Vern Cotter opts for Samusamuvodre after his form for the Warriors and Naitasiri.

“Definitely I will be competing with Ben (Volavola) but I leave it to the people in charge to decide,”he said.

Samusamuvodre joined Naitasiri this season from Nadi where he played five games.

“I played for Nadi in 2019 and moved to play for Naitaisiri since my partner moved to Suva,”he said.

Samusamuvodre represented the Fijian Under-20 side for two years before graduating to senior honors in 2019. He was part of the Senirusi Seruvakula’s  Fijian Drua and Fijian Latui team.

Recently, he signed up a contract with the Dallas Jackals for their inaugural US Major League Rugby campaign in 2021.
