Former politician, Ratu Tevita Momoedonu, clearly recalls the day the 2000 coup happened and the days that followed to when he was sworn in as Prime Minister.

The 75-year-old has served as Fiji’s Prime Minister twice on May 27, 2000 and March 14, 2001 both briefly to get around constitutional technicalities.

Yesterday, he was joined by his family to be awarded a 50th independence commemorative medal in recognition of his commitment and service to the country.

He said he was honoured, humbled and grateful for the medal which he received from the President.

“I have had a very nomadic work experience from 1970 up until now,” he said.

Ratu Tevita started his career as a teacher, before joining Bank of Baroda, after which he went to Australia for two years.

His political stint started when he returned to Fiji and joined the All National Congress Party in 1993, under the late Apisai Tora.

When the 2000 coup happened on May 19, he was one of two ministers that were not in Parliament on that day.

He said he was at home having his breakfast when he received a call that the Government had been overthrown by, George Speight.

For his safety, he was then transported to a safe house at Koronivia where he stayed for one week until he was sworn in as Prime Minister.

Reflecting back on his experience, he said, Fiji has now changed for the better to the point of a common identity for all Fijians and equal distribution of lease money.

Things, he said, which were never achieved by past Governments.
