Maria Tamotubiu is the woman behind the success of the Macuata women’s rugby team.

She coached of the Macuata side to claim the Vodafone Vanua Championship women’s title.

Her commitment towards the Macuata Women’s side is just of another level as she hosted 23 players at her place right from the start of the season.

Fiji Rugby caught up with her after the final where she spoke of the real struggles they had to go through.

“I’m a parcel vendor and that’s my only source income to cater for my family,” she said.

She said hosting around 23 girls from which three are students wasn’t easy but she only did it just for the love of rugby.

She described how their day used to be in camp at her home.

“Every day we had breakfast like boiled uto (breadfruit), fried cassava, pancake and lolo (coconut milk) bun. Sometimes I told the girls to fast because we had little to eat and a very less people cared about us.”

Tamotubiu highlighted that hardly any one visited or helped them financially.

“We were all staying at my place throughout the season.

“I managed to keep their girls together and there was a strong bond. “Sometimes we have no sugar for tea or meals, I tell the girls go and sell food to earn money.

“In one day I sell 25 to 30 parcels and I managed to feed the girls.

“Before we left on Thursday morning, two vehicles came and gave us $150, which was the only money we came with” added Tamotubiu.

She said the commitment and courage by the girls on the final day was outstanding.

“With the difficulties we came through, I knew the trophy was ours. Before the game I told the girls that this game was ours.

“We were confident to win this game from the beginning. I reminded the girls that we have faced a lot of problems and went through so much, only God knows the journey we have gone through to make it this far.

“Only the guts the players had made us win the final” Tamotubiu added.

“Majority of the girls are not working so rugby is the only way they find happiness.

“This win is for them and these girls will now put in more commitment towards rugby.

“We will go back to Vanua Levu and sit down together and discuss our plans because there is very less support given to us.”
