It was an early birthday gift for Manohar Lal Vithal, better known as Manhar, as he received one of the 50th Anniversary of Independence Commemorative medals in Levuka last Friday.

The President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote bestowed the medals at a special investiture ceremony held at the Lomaiviti Provincial Council office.

Celebrating his 67th birthday today, Manhar, is still going strong and is known for his renowned photography skills in Ovalau.

“A special thank you to the people or organisation who had nominated me to receive the medal for the work Anniversary that I love, and serving the people of Levuka and Ovalau.

Mr Vithal has been running his photography business for the past 52 years.

“I felt so excited and happy as this has to be my first ever medal and what makes it more special is it was given by the President of Fiji.”

Manhar began his love for photography at the early age of 15 when he was introduced to it by his father.

His late father came to Levuka in 1947 to start a barber shop and photography studio.

“My interest began in 1968 when my dad would force us to take pictures and I never once regretted it,” he said.

Manhar worked at the Ministry of Information from 1974 to 1976 before his late father called him back to Levuka to look after the family business.

He is also a freelance photographer for the Fiji Sun.

Fiji Sun Publisher/CEO Peter Lomas said: “Manhar has always been a man of extraordinary devotion and dedication. Devotion to the people of Levuka and Ovalau. Dedication to his constant good work as a photojournalist.

“We at the Fiji Sun are proud to have had him on our team for so many years. He shows year after year that he is an extraordinary person. And you don’t have to be in Suva to shine.”

Manhar said: “My best memory would be back in 1985 during the Levuka floods which badly affected the town; there was landslides and floods all around Ovalau and I was the most reliable photographer.”

27 commemorative medals were bestowed in Levuka.

The one-day event concluded with President Konrote Konrote presenting commemorative 50 cent coins to Levuka principals and head teachers.
