A single mother of one child has become the latest drowning victim in the country.

Susana Ana, 23, allegedly drowned at the Waidra Creek in Vakabuli, Lautoka on Sunday at around 8am.

Police Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, said in a statement that the victim had gone to bathe and failed to return home after sometime.

A family-friend of Susana revealed that her parents were still clueless on what had really happened to their daughter.

Mohammed Alim, who has known the family for about seven years now, said: “I was doing my carrier job when a cousin of mine who is working at Tropik Wood called me around 10am to take the girl to Hospital.

“The family brought her body from the river. The creek is very shallow, her parents are still clueless as to how she might have died,” Mr Alim said.

“The parents told me she went down to the creek at 8am to brush her teeth. After half-an-hour they noticed that she hadn’t returned, so her small sister went to check on her, when she reached the creek, she saw her body floating.”

He said the family was originally from Ra.

Ms Naisoro said a post mortem would be conducted as investigations were ongoing.

The death toll currently stands at 38 compared to 29 for the same period last year.
