“Joshua my baby,” screamed 40-year-old Maria Senijale, when the vehicle she was travelling in veered off the road, tumbled twice and landed in a ditch on Sunday afternoon.

Her baby, Joshua Samuela Turagatani, a four-month-old baby died as a result of the accident along Bulileka Road, outside Labasa Town on Sunday afternoon.

He is the youngest road fatality victim so far this year. Ms Senijale, a teacher, from Bulileka Village said they were on their way to Naduri Village for a church service when the accident happened.

Giving an account of that dreadful day, the emotional mother of seven said, “All I could remember was calling out to my son, Joshua my baby.

“An Indo-Fijian man reached out and carried my baby out before helping me out of the vehicle.”

Despite losing him, she thanked God that her baby was spared of any physical injury.

“There were no scratches on his body.

“Out of all my children, baby Joshua was different, he always had this radiance in him that attracted people towards him,” said Ms Senijale in between tears.

“He always loved to smile and responded when we talked to him.”

The baby was in a critical condition and passed away at the Labasa Hospital’s ICU on Monday night. She said the twin cab they were travelling on was hit by another vehicle causing them to land in a ditch.

Police are waiting for the post mortem results. Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the victims were travelling in a vehicle driven by a 42-year-old man from Dreketilailai.

Their vehicle was allegedly hit by another driven by a farmer in his 50s. It is alleged that he lost control of the vehicle.

The four-month-old baby was among 10 others who were treated at Labasa Hospital.
