The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, officially opened the warehouse for Fiji Rice Limited in Dreketi yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “Government is very much committed to ensuring that food security is maintained for us.

“Rice, is a very staple diet, as most people in Fiji eat rice. However, we import more rice than what we actually produce. In other words, we consume a lot more rice.”

In such situations, he says, that there would be an opportunity to have more local rice producers. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the name was changed from Rewa Rice to Fiji Rice was to give a brand name, and to ensure that all farmers contribute to the company and to have a sense of affinity with it.

Chairman of Fiji Rice Ltd, Raj Sharma highlighted that we import more rice than we consume. “The warehouse is partially funded by Government,” Mr Sharma said.

The investment to the new warehouse was $330,000 of which $100,000 was funded by the government.

Mr Sharma said the highest tonne of rice was produced this difficult year, which was 1322 tonnes.

He added that it was important to maintain the quality of rice as it is exported to the Australian market to some extent.
