Korovou resident, Hirday Lakhan, is thankful to the Government for setting the benchmark for new and modern restrooms in Fiji.

The chairperson of the Northland Farmers’ Co-operative Limited, who is based in Korovou said the residents of Korovou are grateful to have a new, state of the art restroom “fit for a minister.”

The Korovou Public Restroom, which cost $190,000, was opened by Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar, last week.

She said the restroom design will be replicated and constructed in other towns and will deliver a service up to par with public expectations.

With the new facility, municipal councils now have a template to follow when it comes to public restrooms.

“I have been very critical whenever I visit the municipal councils, critical of the various infrastructure they have created over time,” Ms Kumar said during the official opening.

“Especially with restrooms. There is a large contrast on what the community wants and what the municipal councils create.”

Meeting basic necessity

Through the construction of the restroom, Mr Lakhan said Government was meeting a basic human need.

“We are also honestly impressed that your team has lifted the whole status and image of the facility in front of us into a restroom instead of simply labelling it a public toilet or a public convenience,” Mr Lakhan said.

“When Ratu Josefa Iloilo was President he used to personally come and do his marketing here in Korovou, so we used to say to ourselves as Korovou people that our market is fit for the President and likewise when Madam Kumar came to open the restroom it is fit for a minister and it needs to be kept at that level.”

The town’s long history indicates that development in Korovou has been sustainable, while the recent developments indicate that there is further potential for development.

In addition to development needs for the town there is the need for a bank, private doctor, pharmacy, better parking facilities and more businesses that could provide employment.
