The new Vodo app which promises to create a seamless pick up experience for passengers and drivers alike has created mixed reaction from taxi operators such as Regent Taxis.

While information on the use of the app is yet to be collected, managing director Harish Chandra is skeptical to how the app would operate.

He said with 53 vehicles under Regent Taxis fleet of operation, installing mobile phones onto the vehicles would be a costly exercise.

“However the app may help in some way but for our fleet of operators it will be very difficult because we have a large fleet and if we have to put the mobile phones with the ones specified in there then it will be way more expensive

“There are some advantages and disadvantages that need to be accessed once we know the costs of implementing and using the app.

“At the moment cost are not very clear and when the bidders submit the details, then we would be able to give a comment,” he said.

Mr Chandra says should each vehicle have the mobile phone installed, it would be difficult to monitor because of turnover.

“We have between a lot of drivers and we have turnover at times so when drivers leave, they might leave with the phone which would be disastrous for the business.

Regent Taxis is based in Toorak, Suva, which acts as the main call centre while the office is located in Nabua.

About Vodo app

The Vodo app has several features such as the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the nearest taxi and send the request.

It ensures that the passengers get the fastest rides and the drivers do not have to travel far to pick up customers.

The core focus of the app is making travels safer.

Basic information, such as pickup and destination points, the driver’s name, taxi plate and car model, is shared between the parties.

Passengers can also send their trip details to friends and family and let them know they are on route.
