The Suva football team have been crowned the Vodafone Premier League 2020 champions.

The Capital City side broke a six-year jinx by holding Nadi to a 0-0 draw at the ANZ Stadium, yesterday to top the VPL points table with a better goal difference.

Suva last won the national league title in 2014.

Speaking to SUNsports, Suva coach Babs Khan said the win was a testament of their hard work.

“It’s good to get the win after six years and hats off to the boys for a good season,” he said.

“The boys have worked very hard throughout the season.”

Khan said when he took up the head coach’s job they had mapped out a plan to win the VPL.

“It’s an honour to win this title because we never won a tournament. This is a blessing.”

He said they would now regroup for the Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament later in the month.

“I want to thank the players’ families for their support and this win is for them. Nadi gave us a good game and they were a well-prepared side.”

What happened: Both teams had their chances to score but poor finishing were their downfall.

Suva had five shots at goal while Nadi had eight.

Suva’s Sairusi Nalaubu had the best chance in the 20th minute but he missed the one-on-one opportunity with Nadi goalkeeper Vereti Dickson.

Both teams finished with 10-men after Suva captain Filipe Baravilala and Nadi’s Serupepeli Naikaci were red carded.
