Coming out of international retirement, burly Fijian winger Nemani Nadolo could end up captaining the Flying Fijians in their Autumn Nations Cup opener against France, early Sunday morning.

In actual fact, Nadolo is the top contender for the job. This was after a cloud of uncertainty surrounds the availability of veteran lock forward, Leone Nakarawa.

They had been the veteran players head coach Vern Cotter was counting on.

According to Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor, the absence of Nakarawa is because he is undergoing a rehab programme with his Scottish club Glasgow Warriors. Nadolo, is also the only player in the current squad camping in Limoges, France, that has played under Cotter before. That was when they were with top French club Montpellier.

In an earlier interview, Cotter said Nadolo’s return to international rugby was a big boost to the Flying Fijians.

“I know him well because he was at Montpellier and we have a strong relationship, plus he has done well at Leicester Tigers in the Premiership,” Cotter said.

“He has assured me that he is playing well and he really wants to play. We feel he’s motivated and Nadolo when motivated is a monster.”

The 32 year-old is a prolific goal kicker and has scored 19 tries from his 30 Test matches for the Flying Fijians.

He also played for the Melbourne Rebels and Crusaders in Super Rugby. In his first Super Rugby year, from his 12 starts, Nadolo was the joint top try scorer with Israel Folau with 12 tries each.

Apart from Nakarawa, halfback Frank Lomani was the only other player in the squad to have captained the Flying Fijians.

Lomani led the Flying Fijians in their 33-31 win over the Barbarians in Twickenham, London, last November.

However, Cotter is most likely to stick with Nadolo and he will be assisted by senior players like Lomani, Ben Volavola, Levani Botia, Waisea Nayacalevu, Semi Radradra and hooker Sam Matavesi.
