Grandparents, Manase Talala and Eseta Leba of Vatoa Island in Southern Lau, knew their prayers were answered when a team of surgeons arrived at their village last Friday.

The guardians to two grandsons, had been slowly investing for a trip to Suva for their grandsons to be circumcised.

Mr Talala said: “This is one phase in a young boy’s life that we look forward to and it comes with a lot of preparation.

“But when Tropical Cyclone Harold hit, it affected our copra production which was our source of income in the village.

“We had to really come up with a plan to financially support our trip to Suva.

“$220 is the adult return fare per person and half price for children.

“Then we have luggage costs, travelling expenses while in Suva and circumcision procedures in Suva would cost around $50 to $100.

“We were at the beach when someone told us that a team of doctors were coming and were also doing circumcision surgeries.”

Ms Leba said the visit came at the right time and that the service too was free.

“Going to Suva is an expensive trip so we only travel to the mainland for very genuine reasons,” she said.

“Aside from this we would travel to Suva once a year.”

Colonial War Memorial Hospital General Surgeon Dr Ilaitia Delasau said from the 35 medical procedures Moala, Totoya, Matuku, Vatoa and Ono-i-lau, eight of them were circumcision.

“Lau is the farthest group of islands in Fiji and its not every week they get to make a trip to the mainland to do errands like most of us,” he said.

“As a doctor, it is our responsibility to help in the health care of these remote villages and it is always a life changing experience.”
