The Ministry of Health and Medical Services through the Vaccine Taskforce is tracking the progress of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by German company BioNTech and US-based Company, Pfizer.

In a statement the companies announced this week that during the first interim efficacy analysis, the vaccine was found to be more than 90 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19.

Submissions will soon be made to the U.S Food and Drug Administration for Emergency Use Authorisation after the required safety milestone is achieved.

Minister for Health, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said; “We are watching that space and we are working with Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiative (Gavi).

“The other thing that we are benefitting from is because; Fiji is punching well above its weight on the diplomatic circle. That allows our discussions and negotiations to be easier when talking to our development partners,” he said.

He said the ministry also had to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine that was brought to Fiji was safe and effective.

“All the vaccines that we have are safe and we use the UNICEF pathway to bring them here which is the standard pathway of the vaccines,” he said.

Fiji’s Vaccine Taskforce is headed by Dr Rachel Devi, a Public Health Physician.
