Motorists and commuters have praised the work undertaken by the Fiji Roads Authority in completing works in the capital.

Works along the much utilised Waimanu Road, Amy Street, Pratt Street, Gordon Street and parts of Samabula were done within weeks.

Joeli Ranitu, 46, a taxi driver, said there was not much inconvenience caused to the public.

“FRA’s decision to grade the roads and reseal it was very good. The old method of just filling potholes was making the roads worse,” he said.

Citizen feedback

Gyanendra Kumar, 38, said the roads in the city were upgraded without causing much havoc.

“I am a regular traveller to the city, and I found that the FRA was on the right track in terms of traffic control and choosing when to do their work,” he said.

Atulesh Singh, 27, said he travelled from Navua to Suva to work.

“The roads were in a real bad state but now I have found that roads are better. Before I used to encounter at least four or five people on my travel with vehicle problems because of potholes,” Mr Singh.

FRA acting chief executive Kamal Prasad said the majority of the work was carried out at night, including curfew hours, however, some work was done during the day.

Mr Prasad said all works were done in a manner that no open section of road created traffic during peak hours.

“In some instances, the road may be reduced to a single lane, and motorists are advised to factor in extra travel time if commuting through the area,” he said.

FRA is now looking at works along the Nasinu Road in Valelevu and Naivorovoro Road in Nakasi. Major projects such as the Vuci Road and Korociriciri Bridge works were still continuing.
