Government is in talks with the Fiji National Provident Fund to help those affected by COVID-19 with home mortgages.

Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said people who were unemployed or had faced salary setbacks because of the pandemic would be assisted.

“We are meeting up with them next week, there are various matters to talk about in respect of how we can help them with their mortgage repayments,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“And also there are some individuals and couples for example who maybe in some dire straits in terms of home mortgages, we are concerned because we don’t want to see people keep their pension but not have a roof over their heads and lose their homes.”

“We have been talking with FNPF, we have been liaising on several other issues. We have been working behind the scenes and liaising with banks to see how many mortgages there are which are not getting paid as a result of people being unemployed.”

He said there were a number of issues which needed to be looked at. He said for some people it was the start of repayments after the repayment holidays.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum made it clear that home mortgages would be a priority.

He said to expect an announcement next week.
