The late Daya Wati Goundar was known as ‘Mother Theresa’ to people that knew her.

This comment was made by local shipping magnate, Goundar Shipping Limited managing director, George Goundar, while describing his late mother in an interview.

Mr Goundar further added his late mother was a loving and selfless person.

“She would always love to help people in the community of Levuka and Koro and her house is always open to people, he said.

He said his mother would pay the education fees for some crew membersof Goundar Shipping.

 

About Mrs Goundar
83-year-old Mrs Goundar hails from Moto in Ba and passed away peacefully on November 15 at her residence in Suva.

“My mum was a main founder of Goundar Shipping and always encouraged myself to do better,” he said.

Mr Goundar said that it was through her blessing and guidance which made him return to Fiji in 2011.

“In 1985 when I had left Fiji to go to New Zealand, mum would always remind me to do something for my country upon returning,” he said.

According to Mr Goundar, his late mother, along with her late husband, Captain Narayan Sami Goundar, were heavily involved with the family owned business ever since it started in 1958.

“She was very passionate about the shipping industry, he said.

With the passing of Mr Goundar’s father in 2013, the late Mrs Goundar had encouraged him to never lose hope when running the family owned business.

At one stage, Mr Goundar had thought of giving his business up, however his mother told him to keep going as he had a mission to complete.

“Her advice was always to be honest with yourself, respect others and be humble, he said.

He said with the passing of his mother, the business would continueto serve the people of Fiji.

Mrs Goundar is survived by six children.

 

Funeral Details
Her funeral gathering will be held today at Mr Goundar’s residence on Lot 60 Domain Road, Suva followed by her cremation at the Dignified Cremations site in Davuilevu at 11:30am.
