A former Labasa resident now living in Australia has been recognised for his selfless acts of kindness to the underprivileged.

Ishaad Khan, originally from Valebasoga, was named Man of the Year by International Film and Entertainment Festival Australia (IFEFA). His award was presented by Australian politician, Jodi Mckay on Tuesday.

It was an emotional moment for Mr Khan as he remembered his mother, Hasmul Nisha and late father, Sahadat Khan who taught him the traits of going out into the world and helping the unfortunate families.

The award did not only bring joy to him but also to the people of Fiji.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun from his Brisbane home, Mr Khan said the award was a testament of the teachings by his parents.

For a number of years, Mr Khan has solely helped families in Fiji and conducting his charity work in Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

“This award is a blessing, my work to help families around the world will not stop,” he said.

“My parents have always been encouraging in putting others before me.”

He said helping others was from his heart.

“This was unexpected, I do my charity work from the heart and I’m blessed that God is on this journey with me,” said Mr Khan.
