Viliame Naqelevuki, 47, woke up to the screams of his wife and found a young man from his settlement standing on top of him with a knife.

The teenaged attacker is now dead.

He allegedly took his life after stabbing Mr Naqelevuki, his wife Maria Tekiteki and their two-year-old daughter Julia Elaine inside their home at Nadonumai, Lami, early yesterday morning.

The Nadonumai community are still in shock over the incident that has left the couple injured and their daughter admitted in hospital.

According to family members of the Naqelevukis, the attack took place around 3am.

They said the teenager, known as Wakolo Junior, entered the house by removing three louvre blades from the window.

The family members alleged that baby Julia was stabbed first, then Maria and then Mr Naqelevuki. The child was sleeping between the two adults.

“I woke up after I had heard my wife scream. It was still dark, the lights in the house were switched off. I got up and felt something sharp on the back of my neck,” said Mr Naqelevuki as he recalled the attack.

“I got up and fought off the attacker. I had blocked his second blow and gave him a few good punches. I drove him out of the house.

“I punched him again when we were outside the house. He fell. He got up and then ran.”

This is when Maria Tekiteki switched on the light and found baby Julia covered in blood. She had been stabbed in the neck.

Compared to the injuries the adults received, the toddler’s injuries were serious. She is currently admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Mr Naqelevuki said he wanted to run after the attacker, but realised the child was injured.

He suffered cuts to his face and the back of his neck similar to his wife’s.

The attacker’s body was found hanging from a tree in Delainavesi.

Mr Naqelevuki said when the teenager was a primary school child he had disciplined him for being naughty, but other than that there was nothing that could give a reason for the attack.

Wakolo Junior lived just two houses away.

Mr Naqelevuki’s mother Ranadi Naqelevuki, 84, was asleep on the upper level of the two-storey house.

She said she did not hear anything until the alarm was raised and claimed the attack was the result of drug use.

Mr Naqelevuki’s son, Manasa, 17, said the attacker entered the house knowing where the things were placed as he was very silent. He too was puzzled as to why he would stab his family members. The attacker was someone they knew, he said.

Mr Naqelevuki said money used to go missing from their home before.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said Police investigations were continuing.
