Lets Go Local: Feakes Recommends Savusavu For First Timers
Australian high commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes, on a visit to Savusavu.

Australian high commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes, prefers to be addressed by his first name.

“Just call me John,” is a line he has repeated when approached in his official capacity.

He has served as Australia’s high commissioner to Fiji for the past three years, and lists rugby as one of his favourite pastime.

His other passion involves advocating for the Heart Ambassadors  for the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital, at Nasese, Suva.

A senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Mr Feakes was high commissioner to Kenya, before he took up his Fiji-based post.

He has served in postings to  Lebanon, Jordan, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and the United States of America.

In Canberra, Mr Feakes has held a range of positions, including assistant secretary, policy planning branch and assistant secretary, strategic affairs branch.

Mr Feakes holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of New South Wales.

He was only too happy to oblige to travel-related questions from SunBiz.

What’s one place you’d take every visitor to in Fiji, and why?

Savusavu – it’s 40 minutes away from Suva, one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Absolutely pristine, and the beers are always cold.

What’s your secret backyard favourite spot?

This one isn’t really a secret anymore – our high commission gym – which a lot of us use regularly.

What’s your favourite place in Fiji for a pie/coffee?

I really enjoy the coffees, pies and samosas from Café Planet, at Korotogo, on the Coral Coast.

If you haven’t stopped in there on your way through to Nadi or Suva, you’re missing out on a great stop over.

What’s one Fiji destination at the top of your bucket list?

Taveuni.
