Construction works along Princes Road in Sawani, including the landslip and works near Sawani Road, will be completed by April next year.

A portion of the road was lost during Tropical Cyclone Harold as flood waters and heavy downpour caused a landslip.

For many months now, the portion was for single lane usage and the cause of traffic delays.

Fiji Roads Authority acting chief executive officer Kamal Prasad said the bank protection work on Princes Road at Sawani was progressing.

“The contractor is Higgins Fiji Ltd and the project is expected to complete in April 2021,” he said.

Residents from the area said the single lane was causing serious traffic issues.

Despite the traffic lights, Sawani resident Mahendra Singh, 56, said: “People have no courtesy and even drive through the single lane on a  red light because the traffic flow favours him when the light changes.”

Bus driver Mikaele Jiuta, 43, said peak hour was the worst as the single lane would cause unexpected delays.

“Normal vehicles can wait, what about emergency vehicles. I am looking forward to the completion of the work,” he said.

Meanwhile, road works along Vuci Road up to Vusuya Road is also progressing well. Authority contractors have started constructing the footpath and drainage work is complete.

The two-lane bridge at Korociriciri is also near completion.
