Defending Vodafone Fiji FACT champs, Ezy Kool Nadi are on track to defend their title after beating Lautoka 1-0 at Churchill Park, yesterday.

Green Machine goalkeeper, Vereti Dickson, played a heroic role with several spectacular saves to help secure the three points.

Nadi coach, Kamal Swamy, said the first game was always crucial to gauge their performance for the tournament.

“First game is just like the final, that’s what I told them,” he said.

“So we worked on those lines. We scored and managed to defend even at the goal line, which is a positive sign.

“We are the defending champions, so we need to play like true champions.”

Swamy said they would work on certain areas like playing between the lines, which was very important and also to block the channels.

“Any team which defends well can win the tournament and that is what we are going to do. All teams will be very strong and especially Suva, they are a champion side. Playing them will tough.”

He praised Dickson for not conceding goals to the Blues.

“Vereti trained very well, compared to the previous games and it showed,” he said.

What happened: Both team played defensively. Lautoka’s Aporosa Yada and Dave Radrigai created a lot of opportunities but their strikers failed to captalise. In the 28th minute Nadi striker Rusiate Matarerega, saw an opening and rifled in a low shot that found the back of the net.

Halftime: Lautoka 0-1 Nadi.

Nadi opted to play defensively and slowed the pace of the game knowing that Lautoka would be out to score the equaliser.

Next Wednesday, Lautoka will face Navua at Subrail Park, Labasa, while Nadi will take on Suva.
