Women empowerment is crucial now more than ever.

This was the key message during the Fiji Institute of Accountants Women in Leadership Forum at the University of the South Pacific Faculty of Business and Economics lecture theatre yesterday.

Minister of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa officiated at the forum, and the panel discussion was themed around Women During COVID-19.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the forum was an important one to interact with women and men who can share experiences and journeys as leaders.

To discuss a theme like Women during COVD-19 with inspiring and aspiring women is an opportunity to act to action, aid and raise the bar to effectively continue on creating strong women leaders as we journey beyond COVID-19, she said.

Gender equality is not just a fundamental right, it’s also pushing for a sustainable future, Ms Vuniwaqa said.

“Empowering women and girls effectively translates to greater economic growth and development, she said.

“The sad reality of 2020 is that projections claim that the Coronavirus outbreak will widen the greater gender equality with health, economy, security and social protection.

Mrs Vuniwaqa suggested as leaders it was vital for women and girls to be put in the centre of our recovery effort in order to gain this drastic impact on gender equality across the globe.

From a global perspective women play a proportional role responding to the Coronavirus being front line workers, health care workers and carers at home.

“We may have progress and there is a still a huge gap that needs to be narrowed.”

The culture of organisations play a vital role in leadership.
