A water-filled shallow hole in a Nasinu suburb has started to smell as residents continue to dump their rubbish in it.

The still water is also a breeding place for mosquitoes, claim residents of Hanford Place in Narere.

The miniature pond sits at the drive way of Vijay Singh’s home.

He said he has made phone calls to relevant authorities including the Nasinu Town Council.

“Green waste was placed there before. The process of picking it up using machinery resulted in a hole,” said the 67-year-old.

“It is now filled with water. People are still putting rubbish in the same spot. I hope this can be cleaned up.”

Mr Singh said the drains near his home were cleaned by him. He claimed that he paid someone to clean his drains as the responsible authorities had not come for some time.

Another resident Mereseini Domolailai, said the bigger issue was the failure by residents to communicate and clean the area themselves.

“We can blame the council or Government. But nothing will happen until we do it. First of all, people should stop putting rubbish there,” she said.

“And if the place is breeding water-borne diseases then let us get together and clean it up. I also hope the Nasinu Town Council fines a few people for improper disposal of rubbish.”

The Nasinu Town Council said cleanup for the area was planned for next week.
