Family On Funeral Trip Meet With A Tragedy Of Their Own

Samuela Malacakau travelled with his family all the way from Sevaci, Cakaudrove, to attend a funeral in Vulovi, Labasa, only to be met with a tragedy of their own.
His five-year-old son, Sireli Tuinabavatu, is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at Labasa Hospital. He was hit by a vehicle while crossing the road on Saturday.
“It is very sad that we have to experience this,” the father of six said.
“Sireli sustained serious injuries on his head and we pray not to lose him.
“We hope the hospital can send him to CWM Hospital in Suva immediately for better treatment.”
Residents of Vulovi who witnessed and heard of the accident have expressed their concern about the need to have a hump on the road.
Two years ago a life was claimed on the same spot.
Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said: “The victim who was allegedly playing on the side of the road with other children suddenly ran across when the incident occurred.
“He was rushed to the Labasa Hospital where he remains admitted in critical condition.”
She said the 44-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit Sireli had been questioned and released as investigations continue.
