Judge To Police: Set Precedent For Cops Breaking Up Marriages

A judge has urged the Fiji Police Force to set a precedent in cases where Police officers are destroying marriages.

This was one of Justice Vinsent Perera’s concluding points while sentencing a Nausori man who was guilty of striking his wife and stepdaughter with a cane knife.

It was heard that Sanjay Lakhan, had caught his wife having an affair with a Police officer.

After a series of attempts to mend the marriage by both parties, it came to no avail. The affair continued. Lakhan acted on impulse while committing the offence.

Justice Perera said while the violent attack and domestic violence case cannot be condoned, he added: “Police officers are required to maintain peace an order in the community.

“The evidence in this case revealed that a particular Policeman’s conduct had not only destroyed a family but also led to a wife and a daughter being maimed and the husband to go through a criminal trial and end up in jail.

“Even though this particular conduct of the Police officer may not amount to a criminal offence, this would be an appropriate matter for the Police Department to look into and after verifying the veracity to explore the possibility of any steps being taken to prevent another case of this nature in the future.”

Lakhan was convicted of two counts of act with intent to cause grievous harm. The incident happened on May 19, 2020.

He will serve the remainder of his four-year jail term in prison which is three years, five months and 22 days.

Lakhan will be eligible for parole after serving 11 months and 22 days in prison.
