Gender equality is not just a fundamental human right – it also is crucial for a sustainable future and it is proven that empowering women and girls effectively translates to economic growth and development.

This was stated by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa during the Fiji Institute of Accountants’ (FIA) Women in Leadership programme at the University of the South Pacific in Laucala, Suva.

With the theme ‘Women during COVID-19’, Ms Vuniwaqa shared the grim reality that during the pandemic there has been a steep increase in the number of cases reported on violence against women and girls. And although; “It has taken centuries of advocacy and affirmative action for feminists around the world to help us get to where we are – we still have a long way.

As leaders, we ought to put women and girls at the center of our recovery efforts.”

FIA president, Pravinesh Singh highlighted the need to provide more platforms to nurture the potential of women into leadership roles.

“FIA looks forward to improving these statistics (more women representation on its council) in future by encouraging women to aspire to be leaders in their respective fields.

We know that actions do speak louder than words and after much thought the Council decided to initiate this event from 2019 to provide opportunities for women to speak, listen, participate and learn,” Mr Singh said.

He has also added that in-light of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence on 25 of November, it is the collective responsibility of every Fijian, every organisation and the Institute to provide platforms and safe spaces to advocate for the protection of women and girls.

The Council is adamant to increasing the representation of women on the Council and will continue to pursue this through its Women in Leadership series.
