David Qiu was determined to pull through no matter what amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The Year 12 student of Yat Sen Secondary School was named the dux of the school during the prizegiving ceremony yesterday.

“COVID-19 forced many of us to stay home and that was quite a challenge because we had take online classes,” he said.

“It meant that we had to put in the extra work to stay updated with all our school work,” he said.

The Chinese-Fijian who was born and raised here said: “It was not easy but I am thankful to my parents for always showing their support and encouragement throughout all my study needs.”

He was also awarded the Year 12 best subject student for Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Computer Studies and was at the top of his class.

Though his parents were unable to attend the ceremony due to their busy schedule, he was grateful for his younger brother’s moral support and encouragement.
