Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua said he was happy with the progress made by the garbage collection team in Nasinu.

“When we took over the Nasinu collection, we went in with a mission that we will ensure that we provide the best service to Nasinu,” he said.

“We have done what we had set out to do. I think there is also a behavioural change in Nasinu residents which is good for all.”

Mr Tikoduadua said he was hoping that Nasinu Town Council’s enforcement team would be meeting up the small number of people who continued to defy regulations in terms of rubbish disposal.

The Council has called on residents of Nasinu to comply with rubbish disposal regulations because this would make the work of the council easier.

The collection unit for Nasinu is separate from the one servicing Suva.

The 12-month agreement was signed by the two municipalities on September 17, 2020.

The whole exercise cost $2.4 million of which the Government was providing $1.6 million and the rest provided by the Nasinu Town Council.

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar, said this was being done for the first time and was a pilot project that could lead to municipalities establishing a company for waste collection.
