Dux Beats All Odds To Excel

Thirteen-year-old Risha Goundar was initially worried she would not excel in school because of having to adjust to a new school over the years.
Risha’s father is a teacher by profession and because of this, she has had to move to several schools.
Despite this, the South Taveuni Primary School student was awarded the dux prize yesterday.
She believes that hard work is the key to success regardless of the circumstances.
Apart from studying, Risha loves to sing and dance.
“I was always working hard because I never knew where our journey could take us, even my father is a school head teacher so he got transferred several times,” she said.
The aspiring doctor said her parents and sisters have always motivated her.
She added that there was a huge competition among other students.
Risha also scored the highest mark in the Fiji Intermediate Examination in Vanua Levu.
Her father, Ravinesh Goundar who is the school headteacher, said his daughter always prioritised studies over her hobbies.
She scored 98 in English and Hindi, 100 in Mathematics, Social Studies and Healthy Living, and 96 in Basic Science subjects.
She will be joining South Taveuni Secondary School for higher studies.
