Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama dedicated his 2020 Champion of the Earth for Policy Leadership award to every Fijian and those who were affected by climate change around the world.

The Earth Award is the United Nations highest environmental honour. The champions were chosen for their transformative impact on the environment and their leadership in urging bold and decisive action on behalf of the planet and its inhabitants.

Receiving his award during the UN 75 Community Day at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday, Mr Bainimarama said that there was no place in the world he would rather be to accept the award than here in Fiji.

He acknowledged the United Nations for the recognition.

“As I stand here today, not for myself but on behalf of every Fijians, on behalf of the Pacific Islands and every person on earth whose lives have been affected and even lost by climate change,” he said.

“In our community you see the climate emergency unfolding before our eyes.

“We see the rising seas and stronger storms. We see the loss of crops including sea life.”

He said Fiji would continue to work with the UN on sustainable development goals.

“In the days, months and years ahead, Fiji and the United Nations will show the world that no enemy from COVID to climate change is too large, even for the smallest of nations,” he said.

“And we will continue to show the world that by working together everything is possible.”

He encouraged Fijians to continue to carry the torch of climate advocacy.

“Look around you and think like a climate champion,” he said.

“Tell yourself I can be the change the world needs.”
