High Rise Contractors Told To Secure Loose Items, Take Down Crane

All high rise buildings under construction were paid a visit by the Suva City Council engineering team yesterday morning and advised to secure all loose items and bring down the cranes.
Suva currently has three high rise buildings over 10-storey under construction. The WG Friendly Plaza, Yue Lai Hotel and a new Fijian Holdings Limited building in Gorrie Street.
Concerns have been raised about flying debris given the estimated strength of winds associated with Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said Council engineers have directed building contractors to do the safe thing.
“We have directed the contractors to bring their cranes down and ensure that all loose materials are tied down,” he said.
“Similarly, we are urging members of the public to stay home and inside. We do not like to see people getting hurt because they are not following instructions.
“We are asking the public to clear rubbish and debris from their homes or streets. These are objects which can get caught in the wind and either damage property or hurt people.”
Mr Tikoduadua said all businesses in the city are to listen to the advisories and decide when to close shop.
He said the Council had closed off the Olympic Pool, Albert Park and Civic Center until further notice.
“We want people to stay safe. Please adhere to the warnings and keep your children at home,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
