It is better to be safe than sorry said 89-year-old Kalara Marawa.

Ms Marawa has lost count of the number of flash floods, hurricanes and tropical cyclones she has survived in the past eight decades.

But one thing she can recall is because of her swift action she and her family have survived them all.

She lives in Wainawa Village, a two-kilometre drive from Monfort Boys Town.

“At about 8am I had started waking up my family members ensuring that we all moved here for safety, Ms Marawa said.

“We have a well constructed house, we have washrooms inside the house and we are also not prone to flooding but that did not stop us from evacuating from the village,” she said.

“I am not doing this because I am old and I am in a wheelchair, I do this for safety. To keep my family safe.”

Her daughter Rosa Yabaki, 66, said that they should not have to wait for Police officers or officers from the National Fire Authority to evacuate them.

“We got to Monfort on our own and we are here well before anyone else,” Ms Yabaki said.
